#024 Tieh-Kuan-Yin tea|正欉鐵觀音

 

The well-known "Tieh Kuan Yin tea" in Taiwan originally comes from tea trees of the Tieh Kuan Yin variety that were grown in Anxi, Fujian, China. Since 1895, these tea trees have been cultivated in the Maokong area near Taipei. This variety of tea has a sweet aroma reminiscent of passion fruit and mango, and it is often medium to heavily roasted. It is popular as a warming tea in winter.


However, the tea trees originally grown in China required significant effort to adapt to Taiwan's climate. The maintenance of cultivation was challenging, leading to the creation of "Tieh Kuan Yin flavored tea," which uses other more easily grown varieties. These teas are heavily roasted to mimic the deep-roasted flavor and are often referred to as Tieh Kuan Yin tea despite being flavored to taste like Tieh Kuan Yin.


Complaints arose from tea farmers who worked hard to cultivate the Tieh Kuan Yin variety. As a result, the tea made from Tieh Kuan Yin trees began to be called "Cheng-tsung (正欉) Tieh Kuan Yin." The term "Cheng-tsung (正欉)" means "authentic tree," signifying that the tea is genuinely made from the Tieh Kuan Yin tree, not from other varieties.


Additionally, since high roasting can obscure the distinctive aroma of the variety, there is a tendency to roast it lightly to emphasize the fragrance of the Tieh Kuan Yin variety.


Using Tieh Kuan Yin grown in the Daan (大鞍) tea district near Zhushan (竹山) township, close to Sun Link Sea (杉林溪), this rare Tieh Kuan Yin tea is lightly roasted to allow the true taste of Tieh Kuan Yin to be enjoyed.
