Holiday food for Chingming festival: Taiwanese Popiah Spring Roll & Cudweed Rice Cake

毎年の4月4日〜6日が台湾の「清明節」であります。清明は、春分の日から15日目の日となり、太陽が強くなり万物が蘇る時期だと言われます。台湾人はこの日に、お墓まいりに行きます。掃墓(お墓をお掃除する)といいますが子供たちにとっては遠足のようなものでした。(お墓を写真撮る事がタブーだったので残念だが写真がありません、、、) 一年に一回しか行かない先祖様のお墓から、一年間長く成長した雑草や木、ゴミなどを掃除してから、事前に準備しておいた果物、茹で卵、鶏や豚などのお肉、草仔粿という母子草やよもぎで作った草餅、紅龜粿(2、3、4番目の写真)という紅麹で赤くした小豆餅…などをお供えにしています。お香を焚いて「金紙」(5枚目の写真)を燃やしていきます。燃やされた金紙は天に行き、天国にいる家族への思いを乗せて飛ばしていきます。長生きを象徴する亀の形にした紅龜粿という小豆餅や春の草を使った草餅、草仔粿も必ず出てきます。潤餅は、お墓まいりから家に帰ってもうご飯を炊く時間がないのでお供え物であったお肉を細切りにして、茹で野菜や卵を春巻きの皮で巻いて食べます(1番目の写真)。揚げない春巻きはさっぱりとしていて、好きな具を入れて自分の春巻きを作り、手巻き寿司パーティーのように家族とワイワイ楽しく食べます。昔はお墓まいりにしか食べない潤餅や草仔粿は今になって人気な町の屋台食になっています。(草仔粿は今九份の人気なお菓子になっています)

Chingming/Qingming festival also called tomb sweeping day or ancestors memorial day, is the day that families gather together to visit and clean the gravesites of the ancestors and pray to the ancestors.

Chingming is the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, which is usually around the 4th to the 6th of April. It is believed that all lives grow faster after the warm sunshine of Chingming, and for kids the tomb sweeping day is always more like a field trip. (It is not allowed to take pictures during the rituals of Chingming, hence unfortunately I don’t have a picture to show you how it looks like...) Offerings such as pork, boils eggs, fruits, rice cakes(picture no.2, 3&4)are prepared and as well as joss paper(picture no.5). We burn the joss paper and they fly to the sky, with our prayers. Turtle shaped rice cake which represents long lives and cudweed rice cake are also a must eat during the rituals. After praying and cleaning the tombs, we go home and make a simple meal from the offerings since there is no time to steam the rice. Meat will be cut into strips, various vegetables to be boiled and we roll them up with a popiah(picture no.1). It is like a taco party with all kinds of toppings and you can just choose whichever you like and enjoy the family time. Nowadays the Taiwanese popiah has turned into a popular street food that you always see in night markets, and also the cudweed rice cake has become a popular snack in Jiufen.
